It is hard to imagine that East London & Essex Brahm Samaj started in a small shop called the Chocolate Box with just 5 founding members and today flourishes with over 400 families. East London & Essex Brahm Samaj over the years has become an integral part of the growing Brahmin population attracting people not just from the local area, but also across the whole country.
The Samaj today stands as one of the most active Brahm Samaj's in Europe having organised various events on small and large scales, invited key guests and priests, organised trips in England and abroad and created a sense of belonging for the members of the Samaj.
Let's take a look at the history of our ever evolving Brahm Samaj.
1979 | : | 5 founding members created a Brahm Samaj in East London |
1980 | : | Second general election took place and a new committee was formed |
1981 | : | The first even ELEB Samaj constitution was approved |
1983 | : | Due to the increase of in volumes of members samaj moved to Seven Kings High School |
1985 | : | Influx of members meant Samaj moved again to Beal high school |
1986 | : | 1997 Samaj continued to grow during this period |
1998 | : | Subhash Thaker elected as President with an increase in the activities aimed at all sections of the community. Events included, charity events, musical events, dramas, Christmas parties, and numerous trips abroad |
1999 | : | Introduction of RE classes, which today attracts large numbers of students run by volunteers on a weekly basis. The Samaj also ran Hindu Studies Courses run by the Oxford Hindu Studies. |
2000 | : | Samaj gained charitable status, embedding its aims and objectives. |
2001 | : | During this period, number of milestone events took place including the Funday to raise funds for earthquake victims in Gujarat; in 2003 the samaj introduced the Baghwat Katha. |
2004 | : | 25th Anniversary of the samaj marked by publication launched at Samuh Janoi with the presence of Pujya Satya Mitranand Girji Swamiji in 2005. |
2005 | : | Ram Katha recited by Sharadbhai Vyas |
2009 | : | Another milestone for the Samaj celebrates its 30th birthday with another publication. First questionnaire took place to under views of members which saw a wave of youth interest aimed to sustain and grow the Samaj |
2010 | : | Saw the launch of the Youth Campaign meeting to encourage the youth participation and the new website launched |
